In 1955 Pope Pius XII designated May 1 as the Feast of St. Joseph the Worker. This is the “May Day” of the communists and the Holy Father wanted workers to know that Catholic Social Teaching respects and honors workers. After all, Jesus was a working man and the son of a working man. This serves as a reminder of how important families are. They provide the initial shape of our values and beliefs. No doubt, Jesus came to call God his “Father” because of the example of St. Joseph. However, the gospels attest that Jesus’ family also objected to his life and ministry. So our families can limit us as well. Let us give thanks for our families while we stay open to God’s new plan.
