In the instruction with Nicodemus Jesus said, “people preferred darkness to light … and do not come toward the light, so that their works might not be exposed.” When you think about all of the deeds of darkness we have seen recently — churches, synagogues and mosques attacked; shootings in schools, indiscriminate killing at malls and concerts — what is surprising is that the perpetrators of these evil actions did not look on themselves as doing something evil. They have so twisted their own grievances as to justify committing atrocities. They live in a convoluted little world that allows no other light to enter. St. Ignatius warns that the devil lives where there are secrets and lies so avoid evil by being willing to be open with others.
