The readings assigned for today seem, at first, to be very different. The first lesson is the story of St. Paul’s conversion on the road to Damascus. The gospel is the highlight of the Bread of Life discourse in John 6 where Jesus declares Whoever eats my Flesh and drinks my Blood remains in me and I in him. The common thread is the call to recognize how close Jesus is to us. For St. Paul, once the scales fell from his eyes he had to recognize Jesus in the people around him: “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting.” In the Eucharist the real presence of Jesus whom we consume in Holy Communion enables him to become nearer to us than we are to ourselves.
