Philip said to Jesus, “Master, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us.” Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you for so long a time and you still do not know me?” You can sympathize with Philip since he embodies the constant human tendency to look for something else. This can’t be it, we think, it’s so ordinary. Literature is full of quests where people go looking for that something else. However as Dorothy discovered in the Wizard of Oz, “If I ever go looking for my heart’s desire again, I won’t look any further than my own back yard.” To find God, Philip, and all of us, must stop looking for something else but more deeply into human life.
