The founder of my religious congregation, Fr. Thomas Judge, CM, said that “every Catholic is called to be an apostle,” not by going off into strange lands and exotic places but “in the providence of everyday life.” We see the truth of that in St. Joseph, whose daily providence was working with his hands. Yet he modeled what a life in God was all about. Jesus, for more that 90% of his everyday life, went to school, played with friends, learned a trade, made a living, said his prayers. Nothing extraordinary about him. “Where did this man get such wisdom and mighty deeds? Is he not the carpenter’s son?” Yet he was just as much the Son of God in the carpenter’s shop as he was preaching to the multitudes. We follow the model of St. Joseph and Jesus by emulating their example of daily fidelity. As St. Paul put it, whatever you do, do from the heart, as for the Lord. We are called to be apostles in the midst of the pots and pans.
