Thomas said to him, “Master, we do not know where you are going; how can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way…” This passage from St. John 14 has a special resonance at St. James. After all, the tomb of the apostle is reported to be in Santiago de Compostela. People have been walking in pilgrimage on “The Way” (“el camino”) to the tomb for more than 1300 years. Thomas doesn’t understand that getting there is more important than being there. Since Jesus is the way we know that the journey of faith is what matters, not attaining some supposed goal. Each day we strive to go just one step farther on the road to sanctity and that makes all the difference.
