Did you ever play the card game “Fish” as a child? If your request for a card is denied you are told “go fish” which means, “draw from the pile.” If the card pulled is the one you requested you shout, “Got what I wanted.” We can think about prayer as a giant game of “fish.” We ask God for things and when they are granted we feel it was a successful prayer. Jesus warns us about that kind of thinking. “Whatever you ask the Father in my name he will give you.” The “whatever” can throw us off since we know that sometimes even our most sincere requests are not granted. We must focus on the “in my name” and join Jesus in Gethsemane.
