When St. Paul arrived in Athens he was at the heart of culture, education, sophistication in the ancient world. Paul tried to blend in by showing off his learning and skills of oratory. “You Athenians, I see that in every respect
you are very religious.” He quoted their poets, used philosophical argument, and all the tools of rhetoric. It was not a successful sermon. This caused him to change how he presented the faith. As he told the people of Corinth (his next stop), “When I was among you I resolved to know only Christ Jesus and him crucified.” A good reminder for us who are called to share our faith. It is not superior arguments but awareness of God’s self-gift that leads to faith.
