One of the most important theologians of the twentieth century, Karl Rahner, claimed that the Church is at a second major turning point. The first occurred at the very early stages of Christianity when the followers of Jesus began to include Gentiles as well as Jews. No longer would the Jesus movement be a Jewish sect, it would now be inclusive. St. Peter affirmed this move when he saw the signs of God’s presence in unexpected quarters. “Who was I to be able to hinder God?” The current turning point according to Rahner is from a Western Church to a world church. If we do not want to hinder God we must also move beyond the way we’ve always done things into the new.
