“You, Lord, show which one of these two you have chosen….” Then they gave lots to them, and the lot fell upon Matthias. The choice of Matthias to take the place of Judas as one of the twelve apostles is instructive in our own spiritual lives. The first followers of Jesus were trying to do God’s will so they searched the scriptures and tried to determine the appropriate criteria. When things still weren’t completely clear they let luck determine the choice. In our lives when we are discerning God’s will for us we often come to an impasse on which way to go. The example of Matthias tells us that we can’t make the wrong choice if our desire is simply to do God’s will.
