The story of the selection of Matthias as an apostle, successor to the traitor Judas, says alot about following the will of God. Peter is very clear that adding someone to the Twelve would have to be the one that God wanted. He carefully tried to figure out what the criteria would be for the one who should fulfill that role. There at the beginning, check. Present during the public ministry, check. Witness ot the Resurrection, check. After going of the list of possible candidates they could still not make up their minds. At that point it became a crap shoot. Let’s throw dice and we’ll presume whosever number comes up is the one God chose. Our attempts to follow the will of God often follow a similar path. We try to figure out the plan of God but in the end things are not completely clear. Which choice is the right one? The example of Matthias says, choose one because God can deal with whatever choice we make as long as our desire and choice is always to follow the will of God wherever it leads.
