St. Luke in the ACTS describes a linear spread of Christianity from Peter’s ministry in Palestine leading to Paul’s in the wider Greek-speaking world. However, a closer look at the events suggests that the actual story was much messier. Pricilla and Aquila, for example, were converts to Christianity in Rome, long before Peter and Paul showed up. Apollos became a Christian in Egypt and had a preaching mission in the Mediterranean world similar to that of Paul. Reading the text carefully you also can discern that this diversity required efforts to present the message of Jesus in a clear and unified manner. For example, when Pricilla and Aquila heard Apollos preaching they took him aside and explained to him the Way of God more accurately.
