One of the more disturbing aspects of our current political climate is the reluctance to talk about, to read about and to teach about our history as it really occurred. The Bible is not afraid to look at the history of the people of God, warts and all. When St. Paul wanted to introduce the meaning of Jesus he told the story of Israel. “The God of this people Israel chose our ancestors...” Those ancestors were a mix of saints and sinners and they did things to be proud of and things to be ashamed of. A very human story. St. Paul was making the point that we can face history honestly because it demonstrates that the hand of God is at work in all things. That is not only true on the Biblical or national level but also on the personal. We can look at our own individual story with all its ups and downs and find there how God has been loving us and leading us into the divine future which is God’s will for us.
