In the so called “last discourse” in St. John’s gospel (chapters 14-17) Jesus tells the disciples some variation of “Peace I leave with you … Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid.” How can we live in peace, have untroubled hearts in such an unpeaceful and troubled world? That made me think of Star Trek, of all things, and the Kobayashi Maru training exercise designed to test the Starfleet Academy cadets in a no-win scenario. James T. Kirk is completely nonplussed on the bridge during the exercise while everyone else is upset. Why? Because he has rigged the exercise. He is not troubled because he knows how it all ends. We have the peace of Jesus because we know how our story ends — with God!
