In the Acts of the Apostles St. Luke included several typical sermons in the style that Paul would have used. “The God of this people Israel chose our ancestors,” said the Apostle. In order to truly appreciate who Jesus is, Paul situated his story in the larger story of God’s action in history. That strategy is just as important now as then. Having an historical consciousness is important to understand Jesus and also what it means to be Church. When people wax nostalgic about the Church of their youth they are enshrining one particular moment as defining the ideal. The reality is that through its long history the Church has changed often. According to ancient tradition the Church is ecclesia semper reformanda, always reforming itself.
