Jesus prayed saying: “I pray not only for these, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, so that they may all be one.” At the Last Supper, the night before his death, Jesus was thinking about, and praying for, us. We are the ones who believe with an apostolic faith. How consoling is it to know Jesus prays for us! But it is a little daunting because of what he prays for. Jesus does not pray that we will be holy, that we will be virtuous, that we will be charitable. Jesus prays that we “may all be one.” Perhaps the Lord knew how hard it would be for us to be one, to stay united. There will always be disagreements and diverse opinions. The challenge is to keep united in the face of those differences. It’s a good thing that Jesus is praying for our unity because we’re not doing a very good job of it currently. Today reach out to someone you feel estranged from to re-build the unity which flows from the heart of Jesus.
