Jesus said to [Thomas], “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” Like most of us, Thomas seemed to imagine that getting to heaven required jumping through a set of hoops: keep the commandments, give to charity, say your prayers, go to Church, be nice to your neighbors. But Jesus gives a completely different understanding: getting to heaven is not about being good but about being in relationship. Jesus came so that we would be able to connect with God in the midst of our lives as human beings. We see in Him that “God-is-with-us.” Getting to heaven happens once we understand that through faith we’re in the threshold of heaven right today.
