Once at a youth camp there was a fascinating exercise. We divided the group up into the light-haired (blonds and red heads) and the dark haired (brunettes and those with black hair.) We treated the two groups differently. The dark haired got new shirts, better meals, the best seats, more attention. The light haired were slighted. The two groups immediately began to look upon each other differently. At the end of the day we reflected on the experience and the kids realized how superficial, how artificial were the things which divided them up into “tribes.” Jesus prayed, “that they may all be one.” We must discover that things which divide us aren’t nearly as important as what unites us — we are all children of God.
