Today President Biden will give the Commencement Address at the Coast Guard Academy. No doubt it will be filled with confident assertions about the future, about fulfilling one’s potential, about making a difference. In the Scripture readings for today Jesus and St. Paul give their valedictory statements which are not filled with happy talk but with warnings. Jesus prayed that God would keep them from the Evil One. St. Paul foresaw that savage wolves will come among you. We should not be surprised, therefore, that the struggle to make this world a more just and peaceful place as God intends continues to this very day. The scriptural lesson, however, is that we must have the blessed assurance that God is with us in the struggle.
