Last Sunday we read from John 13: “I give you a new commandment: love one another.” In the next chapter of John’s Gospel we are given to understand what makes that possible: “As the Father loves me, so I also love you.” It is because we are loved that we can in turn love another. Our own experience of family proves the truth of that. We learn how to love from the first moment of our existence because of the love we experience in family. When the familial love is lacking or dysfunctional we will have to do more work to understand the true meaning of love so that we might heed the command of Jesus. One reliable thing: Jesus loves us just as we are.
