A few years ago Pope Francis added a new feast day to the Church’s calendar for the day after Pentecost: Mary, Mother of the Church. Not only was Mary the mother of Jesus, she also “mothered” the followers of Jesus as they formed a community after his Resurrection and Ascension. She was with them (St. Luke says it was about 120 who remained faithful) in the upper room when the Holy Spirit descended upon them at Pentecost. All these [disciples] devoted themselves with one accord to prayer, together with some women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and his brothers. Pope Francis added the feast so we as Church would remember that we have powerful, prayerful support from the halls of heaven. Often when we see the troubles and divisions that exist in the Church we can become concerned about the future. The maternal protection of Mary gives us blessed assurance that all will be well.
