From his very first comments, Pope Leo has called to world to peace. The Holy Father reminds us that in a world of war and violence the Prince of Peace is more needed than ever. However, I am reminded of a speech that Patrick Henry gave in the lead up to the American Revolution: “Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery?” As the current wars remind us peace demands more then the ceasation of hostilities. As Pope Paul VI told the United Nations: “If you want peace, work for justice.” True peace is not limited to the laying down of arms. Peace as a poltical symbol all too often happens when one side imposes its will on another. That is not Biblical peace. As Jesus told us: “My peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give it to you.” The peace of Jesus can be recognized by mutuality, by appreciation of others, by a sharing of resources so that needs are met, by valuing the gifted of everyone.
