“We must obey God rather than men.” These words from Peter and the apostles in the Book of Acts reminded me of the Letter from the Birmingham Jail written by Dr. King in 1963. He was responding to an open letter from white clergy of the city condemning the direction action promoting civil rights organized by Dr. King. They admitted that the laws were unjust but said that laws must be obeyed. Dr. King countered with the argument that “justice delayed is justice denied.” He insisted that the willingness to face the consequences of civil disobedience, in fact, showed a great respect for the law. Confronting injustice in a peaceful way pointed out the incongruity of tolerating injustice. “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”
