They presented false witnesses who testified, “This man never stops saying … that this Jesus the Nazorean will … change the customs that Moses handed down to us.” The preaching of Stephen caused a violent reaction among the population of Jerusalem. While St. Luke claimed that “false witnesses” slandered Stephen, they actually named accurately the implications of the gospel. Their traditional customs would change! But as we see again and again througout history, the call to change produces resistance, even to the point of murder. In our time Dr. King and Msgr. Romero were both assassinated because they wanted change. While we might not be murderous, that same resistance to change lives in us. Where am I being called to be more forgiving, generous, and compassionate?
