St. John’s Gospel has a “last discourse” where Jesus provided some final words of encouragement to his disciples at the Last Supper, before he entered his passion, suffering and death. His words are also relevant to believers today. “In the world you will have trouble, but take courage, I have conquered the world.” The trouble we experience in the world is just part of the package of living in the human condition. Jesus wants us not to be discouraged when troubles come because we know how the story comes out, we know that in the end all will be well. But it’s hard living in the meantime. There is a James Cleveland song which expresses well the reality that we have to deal with: “Lord help me to hold out until my change comes.”
