In Star Wars the wisdom figure, Yoda, instructs his young student, Luke: There is no try. There is only do or do not. There is a certain arrogance behnd that sentiment as if by my own power, strength, force I can “do.” We learn over time that I can’t do anything, even put my feet on the floor in the morning, without God’s help. As the Epistle of James puts it: You have no idea what your life will be like tomorrow. You are a puff of smoke that appears briefly and then disappears. Many cultures reflect their reliance on God in certain expressions woven into everyday speech. In Spanish one often appends a statement of intent with “si Dios quiere,” if God wills. Among Arabic speakers one frequently hears “inshallah,” if God wills it. In the USA we schedule events months in advance as if we could determine the future. In prayer today give thanks to God for waking you up this morning and starting you on your way.
