We read about the so-called Council of Jerusalem, the first examply of synodality so beloved of Pope Francis, in the Acts of the Apostles. The early Church had to decide what the Gospel required of them. They came to their decision not by philosophical arguments or theological treatise but by telling stories. Peter told the story of how he came to invite a Gentile, a non-Jew, into the faith. Paul and Barnabas told the story of how the gospel was embraced eagerly by the gentiles as they made their missionary journey. By telling their stories they could see where the hand of God was leading the Church. A traditional practice in the spiritual life is the daily examen. Each day one reviews the past 24 hours and reflects on how God was present during the day and gives thanks for God’s presence and prays for greater awareness the next day. Looking at our own story of daily grace will open up for us the new thing God is calling us to become.
