“Be holy.” How are we to obey that Biblical command? What does it mean to be holy? Does it mean we say more prayers, go to Church more often, obey the commandments more faithfully? While these might be good things to do, they do not make us holy. My favorite definition of holiness: holiness happens when “me” is replaced by “we.” We are holy when we get the focus off of ourselves and start to widen our circle of care. Initially, of course, we become holy in thinking of our spouse, our children, our family before we think of ourselves. We progress in holiness by widening our circle of care and realize there isn’t anyone out there who isn’t brother or sister or mother to me.
