Paul in going to Athens was entering the seat of learning in the ancient world — Oxford and Harvard rolled into one. While there he proceeded to preach the gospel using categories of philosophy, reason, literature, etc. “You Athenians, I see that in every respect you are very religious.” The mission was not successful. His next stop was Corinth were he tells us he preached only “Christ Jesus and him crucified.” Corinth became the center of his ministry. Apologetics is what we call using logic to preach the gospel and it is not any more successful today than it was for St. Paul. Instead of apologetics, evangelization — inviting people to come to know Jesus, to experience the love of God — is a more effective gospel tool.
