The modern city of Corinth is about three miles from the site of the town in Roman times. (Ancient cities needed to be defensible and there is a large hill behind ancient Carthage where a citadel could guard the inhabitants.) Archaeologists have been able to reconstruct the ancient town as it would have looked in Paul’s time. You can stand on the old road and look up to the judicial bench where Gallio sat in 51/52 A.D. during the trial of Paul. Behind the bench the powerful citadel looms. All designed to express the power of the empire. Paul was not impressed. He believed that the Gospel he preached was more powerful than any display of worldly authority. We should have similar confidence in the Gospel.
