I had a spiritual director once who suggested that I make a part of my prayer to ask for “the grace of the day.” Jesus gave Bartimaeus an opportunity to do exactly that: Jesus said to him in reply, “What do you want me to do for you?” It is not a surprise that the grace a blind man sought was for sight. Did you ever wonder what would have happened if Bartimaeus asked for world peace or an end to poverty? The initial instinct in seeking a grace from God is to focus on our need, what we are going through. Gradually the circle of our care opens up to include family, community, nation. Eventually the grace of the day is “thy kingdom come.”
