When Gallio was proconsul of Achaia, the Jews rose up together against Paul and brought him to the tribunal. The ancient city of Corinth was abandoned after an earthquake so the ruins from the Biblical era can be visited today. You can walk down the streets Paul traveled on and see the judgement seat where Gallio sat. What becomes clear in doing so is that the Bible stories are about real people who were dealing with real situations in the best way they could. St. Paul’s hopes and dreams and fears were the human ones we all share. Which means that our frail humanity does not limit our ability to share with Paul the mission of bringing the Good News of Jesus into the world.
