At the entrance to Fort Moore (formerly Fort Benning) there is a statue with the words "Follow me" emblazoned on it. As the school of infantry the message is that those who are leading are with you. The last words on the lips of Jesus in St. John's gospel are "Follow me." When Jesus said those same words at the beginning of his ministry they followed behind like puppies. Now after his passion, death and resurrection they understand that following Jesus is not easy, there is no cheap grace, but that he will be with them every step of the way. St. Matthew's gospel ends with Jesus sending the apostles. "Go out to all the nations." But he adds, "I will be with you always." St. John's approach is one that has the same theme of Jesus presence as we bring good news into a hurting world.
