John 17 is called by scholars the “high priestly prayer” of Jesus. He knows that he will not be with this disciples much longer so he prays to God for them. At the end of the prayer he adds this petition: “I pray not only for these, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, that they may all be one.” In other words, Jesus is praying for us, who follow the faith of the apostles. We can draw several lessons from that prayer. First, how consoling it is to know that Jesus is praying for us. Second, the example of Jesus demonstrates that it is important that we pray for one another. Third, Jesus wants us to be united in love.
