Now will I praise those godly men, our ancestors. Remembering those who have gone before us is an important component of many cultures: the Day of the Dead in Mexico, ancestor “worship” in China, the traditional practices of many African societies. In the United States the people of New Orleans go to the cemetery on All Saints Day to whitewash the above ground tombs. I once walked through the cemetery of my congregation, the Missionary Servants of the Most Holy Trinity, with one of the elders. He told me about the men whom I did not know. A vivid illustration, with apologies to Shakespeare, that the good that we do lives after us in the people who are touched by our compassion, generosity and kindness.
