There is a certain irony in the words of the disciples at the Last Supper according to St. John: “Now you are talking plainly, and not in any figure of speech. Now we realize that you know everything.” Of course, they knew nothing of what Jesus was really about, that his passion and death were part of the history of salvation. The irony comes in their inability to understand that the “figures of speech,” the parables and stories which Jesus told, were the most authentic part of his teaching. The parables require that the disciple not passively sit back and receive what was being said. A parable needs to be completed in the life of the listener. The teaching of of Jesus requires human interaction.
