A famous prayer by St. Ignatius begins: “Take, Lord, receive all my liberty, my memory, understanding, my entire will.” The saint wants us to understand that if we have God, we have all we need. I see the beauty of the prayer but must confess that I do cling to my memory, understanding and will. My temptation is to add God to those things I am holding onto. Of course, it doesn’t work that way. I need to echo St. Peter in the gospel: “We have given up everything and followed you.” Or as he says in the epistle: “Set your hopes completely on the grace … of Jesus Christ.” My prayer is that I will be given the freedom to entrust myself completely to God.
