You’ve got to love St. Peter. He was so much like us — a combination of faithful dedication and human frailty. Right after he endured the excruciating triple examination by Jesus of his motivations (“Simon Peter, do you love me?”) he betrayed the same tendencies that got him in trouble in the first place. “What about him?” We do that all the time, right? We compare ourselves with others. If you are from a large family you always made sure that your piece of cake was not smaller than your sister’s. “That’s not fair” is the common cry of children. Jesus wants Peter, and us, to understand that God deals with us as individuals, not in comparison with someone else. The right question: what about me?
