Jesus said to him in reply, “What do you want me to do for you?” The blind man replied to him, “Master, I want to see.” Do you think Jesus was disappointed with the request the blind man made? He could have asked for anything — world peace! — but limited his concern to his physical condition. That reminds me of a book from a few (!) years ago entitled Your God Is Too Small. The author asked if we have limited our understanding of how God works to our own personal and parochial concerns. God is the Lord of History and Author of Creation. God can handle big things! Our God becomes small when we don’t respond to the call to participate in coming of the Kingdom of God. God wants a world of peace and justice and we all to often find ourselves in a defensive crouch just trying to hold on. While God certainly cares about what we are going through we must care about the plan of God for a world to better reflect the wideness of God’s mercy.
