On the feast of the Visitation you immediately notice the gift that Mary gave to her kinswoman, Elizabeth. She walked the ninety or so miles from Nazareth to Judea to support Elizabeth in her pregnancy. We should not overlook, however, the gift that Elizabeth gave to Mary — the gift of blessing. “Blessed are you among women.” “Blessed is the fruit of your womb.” “Blessed are you who believed.” For Mary who was facing possible rejection and scorn for being pregnant before she was married, how wonderful it must have been to be reminded how blessed she was. Everyone appreciates a word of affirmation. Today is a good day to bless someone that you meet.
