How does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? One of the plagues of modern society is the wide-spread sense of entitlement among certain sectors of the population. People who feel entitled imagine that they are owed something, that their position or status or race or education should give them a leg up. Elizabeth is the opposite of entitled. She is humble. She cannot imagine someone from her place in society meriting any special treatment. That Mary, “the mother of my Lord” should come to her and not to some noble or royal official is surprising. Of course, it is the humble who are most deserving of the presence of God in their lives. When you are not full of yourself, you have room for God. That is why one of the keys to a spiritual life is a sense of gratitude. Once we understand that it is all a gift, and not something we deserve, then we become grace-filled.
