St. Paul wrote to the Corinthians: “I handed on to you as of first importance what I also received.” Paul was famous for insisting that he had direct revelation from Jesus. Yet even Paul understood that what was “of first importance” was what he received, what we call tradition. Our own life of faith should remain based on the tradition as well. Yes, we need to be open to the new call of God — just as Paul was in going to the Gentiles. But we must continue to build on the “foundation of the apostles,” on the faith we have inherited. If we stay rooted in the tradition then we will be able to spring wings and fly into the future God has for us.
