The first chapters of the Acts of the Apostles described an ideal community where everyone lived in peace and love. That did not last. Soon there were complaints and rivalry. The situation as analyzed by the apostles is instructive. “It is not right for us to neglect the word of God to serve at table.” In other words, charity was being neglected because the leadership was focused on church-y business. The solution proposed was to find the right structure so that both the evangelizing mission and the charitable mission of the Church are operating effectively. Pope Francis is working to restructure the Church to keep both foci front and center. Saint James needs to make sure that we also are both evangelizing and charitable.
