St. Luke in the Acts of the Apostles portrays St. Peter, as the head of the fledgling church, opening up the fellowship to include non-Jews, Gentiles, to become followers of Jesus. He did so as a result of a direct revelation from God. Since Jesus, Mary, the Apostles, and all of the first followers of Jesus were Jews this was quite an innovation. “God has then granted life-giving repentance to the Gentiles too,” they said in amazement. What a powerful reminder that to be Church requires that we become inclusive. Church is not a club for the comfortable but an embracing mother where everyone feels safe, where everyone belongs. We have assure the divorced, those from the gay community, the undocumented that all are welcome.
