At the call of Simon, later to be named Peter, Jesus said he would be a “fisher of men.” He walked with Jesus for the years of his ministry, saw him work many miracles, heard his parables and his teaching, confessed his identity as the “Christ, son of the Living God,” denied him at the time of his crucifixion, witnessed his resurrection. After all that Peter said, “I am going fishing.” It’s almost as if he is reverting to a former way of life, a life before he knew Jesus. After all the excitement, let’s go back to what we know best. But he can’t go back. He isn’t a fisher of fishes any more. It isn’t until Jesus intervenes that he can catch anything. Peter learned a lesson that we all must apply: when Jesus enters our life everything is different. All that we do, our job, our play, our education, our family, our politics, can only be understood in light of our relationship with Jesus. Don’t look back, but move toward the kingdom of God in all things.
