The gospel readings for the days immediately after Easter tell of the resurrection appearances of Jesus to his disciples. This week the readings were taken from John 6, usually called the Bread of Life Discourse. “I am the living bread that came down from heaven … and the bread that I will give is my Flesh for the life of the world.” These readings serve to remind us that in the Eucharist we have access to the Risen Jesus — that he is really present to us under the forms of bread and wine. Our faith is not a memory (although we do remember) nor is it merely spiritual (though it is spirit-filled.) When we receive Holy Communion our faith in the Risen Jesus becomes concrete, tangible, real.
