The readings for the fifty days of the Easter season are designed to show us what resurrection life is all about. The first reading is taken from the Acts of the Apostles which describes how the Risen Jesus impacted his followers. The gospel reading for this week is from John 6, called the Bread of Life Discourse. We only understand ourselves as Easter people in light of the Eucharist. The chapter starts off with Jesus multiplying the loaves and the fish. After that, the people go looking for Jesus and he gently chides them. “You are looking for me not because you saw signs but because you ate the loaves and were filled.” The people of the time of Jesus, just like in our time, were looking for something, seeking something. Human beings are made for more. Jesus wants the crowd to understand that we can’t impose what we want on God. We tend to think God is blessing us when we are healthy, financial secure and the family is at peace. During the Discourse Jesus will challenge us with the truth that what God gives us is better than what we had hoped or imagined.
