I entered the seminary in 1963 as Vatican II was beginning. The combination of the social and cultural shifts of the 60s along with the aggiornamento of the Council caused massive upheaval in the seminary system. Seven of the faculty members left the priesthood and married. Of my 56 classmates only one persevered to ordination. I remember receiving a letter from a friend who had left which consisted of one sentence: “Why are you still there?” The ultimate answer for me is the one that St. Peter gave to Jesus when Our Lord was wondering if the apostles would continue to walk with him. “Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.” We must share with others how faith fills us with life.
