In the Book of Acts, The people accuse the Deacon Stephen of wanting to “change the customs that Moses handed down to us.” Religious people tend to hold very tightly onto their traditions and when someone proposes changing them they are viewed as a threat. We are seeing something analogous to that in the reaction of some within the Church to the changes Pope Francis proposes. They say “but we’ve always done it this way” not realizing that the “always” they refer to goes back about 500 years and there is another 1500 years of Church tradition to drawn upon. Stephen tried to open people’s eyes to the new thing God was doing then. We must be alert to the signs of God’s presence in today’s world.
