Rick Warren, pastor of a megachurch, talked about a revelation that he had looking at the Bible more closely. “I found 2,000 verses on the poor. How did I miss that? I went to Bible college, two seminaries, and I got a doctorate. How did I miss God’s compassion for the poor?” A powerful reminder that the only way to authentically witness to the gospel is by caring for the poor. Notice that Paul and Barnabas are not given their commission to preach until after they had “completed their relief mission.” In his letter to the Galatians Paul reports meeting the Church leaders: All they asked was that we should continue to remember the poor, the very thing I had been eager to do all along.
